1MO Story
1 Million Opportunities was started as an idea in the summer of 2024 as Bruce St. Clair found himself in career transition in a modern day job market that did not resemble anything he had seen before. The onset of Artificial Intelligence had changed the way the game was played and created more challenges for both job seekers and talent acquisition teams than ever before. Ghost jobs, hidden job market, easy apply buttons, resume keywords and ATS have all contributed to this confusing new world of seeking work. One very important factor that Bruce believed was missing was human support, connection and regular interaction with other people in this space.
These challenges convinced Bruce that there is a better way. He envisioned a place were local job seekers, HR professionals, recruiters and employers could come together to share ideas, make connections and use their collective powers to navigate the treacherous landscape of the current job market.
Having been heavily involved in the local networking community, his passion to find a better way and to help others led to meetings with other founders of 1MO including David Carley, Pete Reinke, Dave Myers, CJ Jenkin and Samantha Huhn. Together, this group put together a framework to help guide unemployed, underemployed and unhappily employed professionals through the confusion of putting all of the pieces together to formulate a career search strategy to result in finding more meaningful work.
September 30, 2024 was the launch of the group at the Fowler Family Center of Northampton Community College’s South Side Campus. Since that first meeting, it was clear that there was a need for this group and that bringing all of these people together that want to help, was going to mean success for everyone. Since that day, the topics and presentations have grown organically and 1MO has had several graduates that have found the meaningful work that they were seeking. New people have joined and the organizational committee has expanded with new members.
It is unclear how big this movement will become. One thing that is clear is how important human connection and the support that the folks in this group give to each other. Being unemployed is a lonely and scary place. Having a place to know you are not alone, feel vulnerable and be able to contribute to other’s success is vital to maintaining the emotional and mental stamina to continue to work towards your goal.
Join us and we can all help each get to where we are meant to go.
